It's an objective fact that the 5:30am regulars are built different, and Brint Patrick is one of the most faithful there is. Read more about Brint, a new-ish member who feels like he's been around for a long time!
Q: What brought you to Renew and how long have you been a member?
A: My wife and I relocated to Austin from Charleston, SC in January. I have been a doing CrossFit since 2013 and I have been actively engaged in the CrossFit community everywhere we have lived. CrossFit Renew specifically because I had met Chris Allman at my box in Waco many years ago and his faith mission aligned nicely with mine so I thought this would be a great spot for me. Additionally, my short-term housing is right down the street. I have been a member since January.
Q: Where are you from? If not from Austin, how long have you been here?
A: Originally, I am from Waco, but we have lived a lot of places over the years. My folks still live in Waco, but both of my brothers live in Austin. We have been here for four months.
Q: One year from now, what do you hope to have mastered? What skill or lift do you hope to add to your wheelhouse?
A: Over the years I think I have lost more movements than I have gained. For me, I would like to recapture handstand pushups and bar muscle ups…I don’t think ring muscle ups are in the cards. I would also like to run a little faster but wouldn’t we all.
Q: What’s your favorite movement?
A: I love rowing. We have had a rower at the house for many years, and I love to just hammer away. For me it is one of the most efficient ways to burn up a few calories.
Q: What’s something Renew has taught you about your fitness?
A: The coaching at Renew has really helped me fine tune my form. Whether on a rower, lifting movements or gymnastic techniques, positive coaching is always helping me make the most of my efforts.
Q: What do you do outside of the gym? Both for work and play?
A: For work, I am the Executive Director of a faith-based nonprofit called Water to Thrive (watertothrive.org) that provides clean water in East Africa. I have spent most of my professional career in the international faith based nonprofit sector and I have worked in around 45 countries.
For play, I spend the summers fishing and the winters hunting. Living in Charleston for the last several years allowed us to spend a lot of time offshore and inshore fishing but I guess I will have to transition back to bass fishing now that I am back in Texas. As far as hunting goes, we are in a mixed bag of deer, ducks and birds. We currently have a dog in training in Oxford, Mississippi to be a duck dog. My wife thinks the dog is coming here but my son thinks differently. That should be fun to watch.
Q: What’s your favorite eatery in Austin?
A: A lot of my friends moved to Austin to attend UT back in the 80’s and we became big fans of The Salt Lick back in those days. Over the last 35-40 years we have continued to order bbq from The Salt Lick on special occasion and have it shipped to wherever we are living. It is just a fun thing for us, and we really enjoy it. I am sure we could add some new things to the list, but I am happy to stick with what works.
Q: Tell us something we don’t know about you.
A: I was never an Austin guy. I always said I would never live here…and here I am. So far, we are enjoying it, and it looks nothing like the Austin of my college years. The right people really make a difference, shout out to my 5:30a people.
Brint, we are glad you're now an Austin guy and met our fearless founder all those years ago!
