Member Spotlight: Khadijah Sawyer

Member Spotlight: Khadijah Sawyer

Khadijah Sawyer is an instant good time. She works hard, invests her time/talent/treasures in things that matter, and absolutely brings the energy to every session, class, and competition! Evidenced by every passionate response in this lil Q&A. Get to know one of our 3+ year members, Khadihah!

Q: What brought you to Renew?

A: My bf! When I first moved to Austin, I was bored with the typical commercial gyms and wanted to explore new forms of movement. Patrick did his Googles and thought a highly rated CrossFit gym would be a great fit for me. Turns out, he was right I've been a member since 2020. (or 2021 if you count the shutdown). I came for interesting, varied movements but stayed for the culture and community.

Q: One year from now, what do you hope to have mastered? What skill do you want to add to your wheelhouse?

A: All the things! My passion is Olympic weightlifting but I've been working with Tim 1:1 for a little over a year to work on my gaps (namely, gymnastics and feeling more comfortable supporting my body on the rig). Hollow hold who!?!?

Q: What’s your favorite movement?

A: Gotta be wallballs, burpees, or snatching. Hurt soooooo goooood.

Q: What is something fitness-related that you’re most proud of?

A: My shift in mindset - namely, shifting from a focus on what my body looks like to what my body can do.

*Rant activated*

For so long, we've been programmed to believe that fitness is inherently tied to manipulating what your body looks like. But, what if my back fat has nothing to do with my ability to knock out burpees? My mid sized body is in fact, a healthy one and I am so proud/grateful that I can finally see that.

Q: What do you do outside of the gym, both for work and play?

A: Work - I am a UX designer on Google Chrome, which means I focus on designing new features for the browser. For play, I'm really in my travel bag right now. We just came back from Costa Rica and that week in the rainforest was transformative. Hoping to add more stamps to my passport this summer!

Q: What is your favorite eatery in Austin?

A: By far the toughest question on this list. I love culturally relevant foods so some of my fave spots are Casa Columbia, Chosun Galbi, and Bikkle.

Q: What’s something we don’t know about you?

A: Well, I am the only member of this gym who has done EVERY. SINGLE. REBAR. CYCLE. TO DATE. Give me my 10s. K, thanks.

10 for you, Khadijah Sawyer. You go, Khadijah Sawyer.
