Member Spotlight: Miko Marquez & Lucy Fang

Member Spotlight: Miko Marquez & Lucy Fang

Meet Renew's newest newlyweds and arguably most well-rounded members, Lucy & Miko!

Q: What brought you to Renew and how long have you been a member?

Miko: I started CrossFit in 2016 and got Lucy into it in 2018. I moved to Austin in 2021 and around April I looked up the Instagram/social media of every box in a 5 mile radius. Renew seemed like a great fit and our first few classes confirmed it!

Lucy: What Miko said. Now we've each attended over 400 classes including CrossFit, Rebar, and Reframe!

Q: Where are you from? If not here, when did you move here?

Miko: I grew up in Lithia, Florida south of Tampa. Went to UNC-Chapel Hill in North Carolina, moved to Madison, WI for work, and then eventually Singapore. Moved to Austin in January 2021 to reunite with Lucy.

Lucy: I grew up in North Houston, and graduated from UT Austin in 2017. I moved to Madison, WI for work but could only suffer through two winters before moving back to Austin in 2019.

Q: One year from now, what do you hope to have mastered? What skill or lift do you hope to add to your wheelhouse?

Miko: I hate being upside-down, mix of mental fear and horrible overhead mobility. So while I can't commit to being a master at handstand push-ups, I aim to at least have a reliable kick up to the wall.

Lucy: I have been saying it for years now, but I would love to do a bar muscle up. Maybe 2025 is the year that I finally take steps towards achieving this goal!

Q: What’s your favorite movement?

Miko: Easy, any non-oly barbell lift. Squats and deadlifts are my jam but I'll throw in a front squat to keep it spicy.

Lucy: To no one's surprise, my favorite movement is pull-ups. I get to put my swimmer's lats to good use.

Q: What do you do outside of the gym? Both for work and play?

Miko: For work I'm a project manager and integration engineer for Epic Systems. If you work in healthcare you know us. I come from a medical family so talking to doctors, nurses, and admins about IT is second nature :) For play I'm on the water, specifically lady bird lake, quite a lot. I'm a coach for the Austin Coolers dragon boat team, member of the Austin Outrigger Canoe Club, and member of the all-Texas Lone Star Dragons. I got to represent TX at nationals in 2023! My goal is to get Austin to the level of the teams in Houston and Dallas.

Lucy: For work, I'm a data analyst and SQL report writer in healthcare IT. I get to tippy tap at my computer collecting and transforming data. For play, I have grandma hobbies - I like to embroider, crochet, read, and do any type of puzzle (crosswords, Japanese logic puzzles, and regular puzzles).

Q: What's your favorite eatery in Austin?

Miko: I love hotpot and think Soupleaf here in Crestview is great. That's saying something considering I lived in Singapore where hotpot can be found in every neighborhood. There's a growing Asian food scene around here which I appreciate.

Lucy: I know this question asks about favorite eateries, but I'm going to answer favorite drinkeries. Miko and I absolutely love boba. We usually rotate between Happy Lemon, 85 Degrees, and Kung Fu Tea. My go-to order is usually a peach/mango green tea with boba, less ice, and 25% sugar.

Q: Tell us something we don’t know about you.

Miko: Some probably know this, but Lucy played sports her whole childhood! There's a picture of her at age 6 where she has abs.

Lucy: Miko is a fantastic musician. He plays the guitar (mostly electric), and has a growing pedal collection. Hit him up if you want to jam!

Miko & Lucy, y'all are the definition of a power couple. If there were an Olympic event for shredding the guitar and running SQL queries while paddling a dragon boat, you would win the gold medal every time. We're so glad you're both here!
