Meet Aaron - dad, fancy sales VP, and the member most likely to greet you with a big smile when you walk into the gym.
Q: What brought you to Renew and how long have you been a member?
A: In the summer of 2022 I was experiencing a high level of stress and I was looking for a healthy habit. I also wanted a fitness community after my last one fell apart during the pandemic. I had never heard of CrossFit and I thought it was going to be an adult jungle gym, like monkey bars and flipping tires. I had no idea it included Olympic lifting and gymnastics, which seemed like things my body was not ready to do. But when I joined Coaches like Colin, Brett, Chris, and Tim were really supportive, teaching me the movements and making sure I didn’t overdo it. And I’ve been hooked ever since. It’s been 2.5 years!
Q: One year from now, what do you hope to have mastered? What skill or lift do you hope to add to your wheelhouse?
A: I really want to be able to do consistent pull-ups. Right now I max out around 5-6 in a row, but I know I can do more with better skill practice. Maybe even do a muscle-up.
Q: What’s your favorite movement?
A: Maki Rolls in Reframe, and all their versions. You get instant feedback, and it’s so rewarding when you get into a flow!
Q: What is something fitness-related you’re most proud of?
A: I’ll always remember the time when I doubted if 30” box jumps were even possible. Coach Tim gave me some “inspiration” and some jumping tips. I finally tried one and made it! I didn’t realize that several other coaches had paused their meeting and were watching me thru the door. They all cheered for me when I made it up!
Q: What’s something Renew has taught you about your fitness?
A: I learned a lot more about the connection between sleep, nutrition, and fitness. Before CrossFit I had never pushed my body so hard to complete a workout, so consistent nutrition was more of a “nice to have.” But I would be gassed at the end of every workout. Slowly building mindful nutrition habits has made a big difference.
Q: What do you do outside of the gym? Both for work and play?
A: I work as a Sales VP for a software company. It feels like an “always on” job, but the gym really helps me set boundaries and take care of myself. For fun I like live music, DJ sets, sneaking into hotel pools, dive bars, camping, traveling to Latin America, tennis (not pickleball), and exploring everything with my 3 year old daughter.
Q: What’s your favorite eatery in Austin?
A: I really like Le Bleu. I can eat a healthy Bun bowl, or comfort food curry, or the city’s best banh mi. And the service is amazing!
Q: Tell us something we don’t know about you.
A: I’m passionate about serving people experiencing homelessness. I have been volunteering at a homeless support organization called Mosaic Street Ministry for 5 years.
Aaron, you win for the first time anyone has named a Reframe move their favorite movement. Thank you for bringing your encouraging spirit to Renew; we're so glad you're here!
