The term “not all heroes wear capes” was coined specifically for Kelsi Dawe, who is an RNC-NIC, MSN and Team Lead for the level IV NICU (which is the highest level a NICU can be) at St. David’s Medical Center. Her peers revere her as a “brilliant nurse” and a “total badass” and frankly – we agree. Learn more about this long-time member, and listen closely in class for A+ jokes under her breath.
Q: Where are you from? If not here, when did you move here?
A: Born and raised in Austin, TX! I left for college in Dallas for a few years but have been back again since 2010.
Q: What do you do outside of the gym? Both for work and play?
A: Work: I'm a NICU nurse at St David's Medical Center. More specifically I'm a Team Lead and attend deliveries, take babies to surgery, place central lines and generally just try to help the unit run smoothly.
Play: I enjoy road-tripping to/camping at various National Parks, concerts, and beaches; frequenting the swimming holes in and around Austin; hanging with friends and family and making sure my plants stay alive.
Q: What brought you to Renew and how long have you been a member?
A: It was a pretty slow process but I got here eventually! A few of my friends had joined the gym, but I was apprehensive because it had been a few years since I'd done any weightlifting-type workouts. I was friends with Becky and I would go to her house to workout, and she even met me at the gym I was going to at the time to see what I had available to me other than the treadmill (this was pre-PT and showed her commitment to others' health). I went to a BAF (Bring a Friend) workout, eventually started going to the Saturday community workouts, and then did Foundations in 2017 and finally became a member!
Q: What’s your favorite movement?
A: Most barbell movements. I don't mind the rower or single-unders. But I will hate lunges forever.
Q: What would you say to a person who is apprehensive to join a CrossFit gym?
A: Every movement has many scales and iterations to help you have a safe, fun and challenging workout so do not be deterred by what’s on the whiteboard!
Q: Tell us something we don’t know about you.
A: One time in Ukraine I thought we were going skydiving and it was in fact parachuting. We had to jump out of the plane and land all by ourselves. And I did it without a second thought. That would not be the case today.
Q: What’s your favorite eatery in Austin?
A: Hanks for the drive-thru lattes and spicy margs, Pad Thai Mueller for the Gang Garee, Salty Sow for the HH, Wu Chow for dim sum, Launderette for the brunch.
Kelsi Dawe, ladies and gents. Come get to know her at (usually) the 11:30am’s when she’s not saving literal lives
