Okay, so by now… you’ve likely heard of CrossFit. You’ve seen people lift big weights on Instagram, you’ve seen the memes across Facebook, and maybe one of your co-workers goes to CrossFit at 5:30am and Slacks you about it at work every day. In fact, I’d bet on that last one. CrossFitters are notorious for annoyingly retelling you in great detail why they love CrossFit.But before you write us off and opt to join your big-box globo gym, I wanna share with you four reasons why not all CrossFit gyms are created equal and why I, in my complete and total unbiased opinion as the owner of this gym, think CrossFit Renew is the best CrossFit gym in Austin, Texas (nay -- the world!).
When choosing a gym, price and location are often the deciding factors. But a great CrossFit gym with an even greater community is worth the extra 10 or 15 minutes on the road. If there are two things I know it’s that CrossFit is a social sport, and accountability is the key to fitness success. Combine those two things at a gym who prioritizes fostering community, and you’ll suddenly find yourself surrounded by like-minded, supportive people who ALSO love doing an obscene amount of wall balls.I can confidently say we have this at Renew. One of our gym’s core values is to care for the whole person -- which transcends the walls of the gym. We want to know our people inside and out, and encourage them not only in their physical health, but mental, emotional, and spiritual one, too. Basically, if you plan to move anytime soon, we want to be the people you call.
Our mission is to help people fight sickness with fitness, but it’s our desire to understand the wants and needs of our members; to understand their “why.”Globo gyms want to get you in the door and lock you into a contract. Good gyms want to get you in the door, buy a membership, but also want to hear your goals. But great gyms want to get you in the door, commit to a lifestyle change, hear about your goals, and know your motivations behind those goals. This is us, we’re the great gyms. Understanding the “why” is a very powerful (and important) tool to client success. Is it about more than just losing weight and getting strong? Do you want to be able to run with your kids? Do you want to compete in a marathon? Do you want to outlive and outsmart lifestyle diseases that seem to run in your family? We cut straight to the chase in our free intros with a goal-setting and why-understanding session. You can learn more about those here.If no one sits down with you and talks to you about your goals and your “why,” then they don’t truly understand you. And like Dale Carnegie said, “the deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated.” You deserve to find a gym that appreciates you and this is one of the main reasons why we believe we are the best CrossFit gym in Austin, Texas.
Despite all the cold, hard truths you read on the internet (?), CrossFit is not all about bad form, heavy barbells and kipping pull-ups. It’s about community, fitness, and wellness. And kipping pull-ups.Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit, defined fitness in 100 words: “Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch, and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat. Practice and train major lifts: deadlift, clean, squat, presses, clean-and-jerk and snatch.“Similarly, master the basics of gymnastics; Pull-ups, dips, rope climbs, push-ups, sit-ups, presses to handstands, pirouettes, flips, splits and holds. Bike, run, swim, row, etc. hard and fast. Five or six days per week, mix these elements in as many combinations and patterns as creativity will allow. Routine is the enemy. Keep workouts short and intense. Regularly learn and play new sports.”In any health and fitness routine, nutrition is responsible for 80% of the results. And those who become clients of nutrition programs see 3.5x the results compared to those who just exercise. And you know what? People who don’t see results, quit. If you want the fastest route to results, you need to do more than exercise -- you need to dial in your nutrition. So why not find a gym where you can get both?“But it’s so expensive!” Yes, all of this can be expensive. But guess what? It can also be cheap. And when it comes to fitness, you will certainly get what you pay for.So ask yourself: do you just want access or do you want service? If access to equipment is what you’re after, then perhaps the lower priced, big-box gym option is for you. If you want quality coaching, thoughtful programming, and intentional accountability in both exercise and nutrition, however, then it is more than worth your investment.
